I have learnt through trial and error that idol worship is exhausting. It demands every inch of your being yet gives nothing in return except emotional exhaustion and loss of peace of mind. The idols are far ranging from relationships, (of all varieties!) job satisfaction/security, bigger and better things, the need for approval, perfectionism...the list goes on and on. These things are not wrong in themselves but they become idols when more important than knowing God. The common theme though is that they all set themselves in competition with the 2nd commandment:
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; Exodus 20 v 4
You shall not bow down and worship them. Eg nothing is to take the place of the rightful place God deserves in our hearts. He should be the sole source of our worship and devotion not the list of idols I started with. The things which take our focus away from God and onto the things of this world. Ironically when our relationship with God is right we can then enjoy all the things on my list, and more, because we are holding them in their right place....below God. We don't need to grasp and fight for them because our dependence and trust is in God.
